2005 marked the 30th Anniversary for Oban Otters, which was established to teach, promote and improve swimming skills in the local area. During that time hundreds of children have progressed through the Club. At present the Club has approximately 200 members of mixed ability (and many more on the waiting list) ranging from 6-year-old non-swimmers, to the more confident width and length swimmers, culminating in the squad swimmers who train four times a week.
The Club holds 19 swimming classes each Thursday evening from 5.00 – 9.30pm. In addition the squad train at 7 am, three mornings a week and attend regular swimming meets with other clubs around Scotland; several Otters swimmers have also been selected to swim in the SASA West District Championships, Scottish Schools Championships and the Scottish Nationals
Otters reaches its annual highlight at the beginning of December when all the swimmers (from the teaching pool to the squad) have the opportunity to take part in the Club Championships. An increasing number of longstanding club records are broken each year
All of the club’s coaches, teachers, committee members and helpers are volunteers and the club is financed through swimmer membership, grants and local sponsorship.

CHILD PROTECTION
Oban Otters, as an Affiliated Club of the Scottish Amateur Swimming Association (SASA), have adopted the SASA child protection guidelines. These guidelines have been set in place following the full enactment of the Protection of Children (Scotland) Act 2003, enforceable from 10th January 2005.
The guidelines cover both amateur and professional people where close contact with children is possible. They are designed to give protection to both children and adults. Two courses are provided by SASA, the Good practice Course (essential for all adults with potential contact with children) and the Child protection Course (essential for the Club’s Child Protection Officer- CPO)
If you would like any further information regarding the above or have any concerns regarding child protection issues within Oban Otters ASC please contact the Club’s CPO in confidence: Caroline MacArthur
