Oban Otters exists in the first instance to teach beginners and improvers to swim to the best of their ability.  A great deal of importance is placed on teaching technically correct strokes, often giving the impression that progress is slow.  But, at the end of the day, it is hoped that stronger, more proficient swimmers are produced.  As swimming is a competitive sport, the Club offers those who show interest and dedication the chance to move to the competitive side of Otters where more advanced training takes place and competitions to suit different abilities are available to those that wish to partake in them.

Children are eligible to enter the learn to swim school side of the Club from the age of 6 years.  Complete beginners will start in the learner pool and progress on through tanks 1, 2, 3 and 4 at their own speed.  An assessment will take place periodically by the Club Coach and teachers.  They discuss each swimmer’s progress and promotion.

Promotion from tank 4 can go two directions, either into the lengths side of the swim school or onto the junior development squad in the competitive club.

Each class is taught by a SASA qualified teacher on a voluntary basis.  Because help is always needed, courses are held regularly to encourage new teachers to the Club.  If you could help in this way, please contact the committee for more information.
